Thai Open to go ahead as planned

Organisers BEC-Tero insisted yesterday that next week's ATP Thailand Open will go ahead as scheduled despite the current political situation.
Brian Marcar, the company's general manager, said in a statement that the current political turmoil would not affect the US$550,00 tournament, which starts on Monday at the Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani. "We would like to announce that the Thailand Open will go ahead as scheduled," he said. "As proclaimed by the military, the coup which took place on the night of Tuesday, September 19, is a temporary measure in the lead-up to government elections in an effort to restore democracy," added Marcar, the vice-chairman of the ATP Thailand Open's organising committee. The ATP reportedly contacted the organisers to check whether developments in Bangkok would affect the tournament. "The Thailand Open organising committee assures players, officials and visitors that Thailand remains a safe and peaceful country, and we warmly welcome you. "We will continue to keep you informed of any developments, and we look forward to seeing you at the event," Macar said in the statement. A strong fields of players, including world No 3 Ivan Ljubicic and No 9 James Blake, are expected to take part in the tournament. Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis is already in Bangkok and is training for the tournament after winning in Beijing last week. Officials said there was had been no withdrawals after the coup on Tuesday night. Former world No 1 Marat Safin, already informed of the situation, is still planing to play in the tournament. Meanwhile, Thailand's Davis Cup team is ready to play despite the military coup. Thailand's Davis Cup team will go ahead with their World Group play-off tie against Germany in Dusseldorf this weekend despite the military coup in their country. "We have spoken to our families back home and all are well. We will play," said team captain Thanakorn Srichaphan in Dusseldorf yesterday. Germany and Thailand meet on clay at the Rochusclub from Friday to Sunday. The winning team will earn a spot in the World Group next year, with the loser relegated to the qualifying zone group.
