Guard against infection

Guidelines on how to guard against hand, foot and mouth disease, as drafted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration:
1. Children with cough, fever or any other symptoms that can be associated with the disease should immediately visit a doctor and take time off from their classes. Teachers must watch for these symptoms among their students every day and alert parents if any student shows signs of such symptoms.2. Schools and nurseries should give information about the disease to parents with emphasis on how to prevent the infection and to maintain proper hygiene, especially for things that children tend to put into their mouths. 3. Schools and nurseries should strictly follow hygienic standards: 3.1. Cleaning floors, toys, toilets and bathrooms, kitchen utensils, plates and glasses. 3.2. Encouraging students to wash their hands regularly, especially before meals and after using toilets. The schools and nurseries should provide soap at all lavatory sinks. 3.3. Students should not share glasses, straws, spoons, plates and nursing bottles. 3.4. Schools and nurseries must have proper excretion disposal. Keepers should wash their hands after changing babies' diapers or after contact with the babies' excretion, nasal mucus and saliva. 4. Patients with hand, foot and mouth disease should take time off from class for at least one week after developing the symptoms. They must not go out and play with children in their neighbourhoods either. 5. Schools or nurseries may close down temporarily if they detect an outbreak at their facilities. Also, schools and nurseries must emphasise cleanliness for kitchen utensils, plates, glasses, toilets and swimming pools. The chlorine level in the swimming pool must be strictly up to the standards. - THE NATION
