EC to get nod soon

The nominations of five new election commissioners could be sent for royal approval this week, Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua said yesterday.

Suchon said he had received letters from the five commissioners stating that they had quit their previous positions, as required by law before they could take their posts in the Election Commission (EC).

Senate officials have to check to ensure that the resignations have become effective before passing their nominations to His Majesty the King, which Suchon believed would be done by Friday.

The five new election commissioners, whose appointments require royal endorsement, are EC chairman-designate Apichat Sukhakkanon, Somchai Jungprasert, Sumet Oupanisakorn, Sodsri Satayathum and Prapan Naikowit.

Somchai and Sumet yesterday made an unofficial visit to the EC headquarters for a brief meeting with election officials. They reportedly discussed preparations for the upcoming general election.
