HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
PAD holds big rally on Wednesday despite Thai Rak Thai's warnings

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) will stage a mass rally on Wednesday to demand that caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra quit politics and live in exile.

The rally will start at Democracy Monument and march to the Royal Plaza.

The PAD is going ahead with the rally in spite of warnings by Thai Rak Thai Party executives that it could violate election laws and worsen the political turmoil if it got out of control or third parties became involved.

Thaksin is scheduled to return to Thailand on Friday after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Briefing for EC members

Election Commission (EC) members Somchai Jungprasert and Sumet Oupanisakorn will meet at EC headquarters to discuss the upcoming election and to be briefed by the EC secretariat.

Each of the five new commissioners was assigned responsibilities this past Friday. Sumet was given charge of public participation while Somchai got investigations.

TRT to decide on candidates

The Thai Rak Thai will finalise its candidates for the next election between tomorrow and Thursday.

The party is expected to field different candidates from the last poll - on both the party and constituency lists - as a result of ongoing anti-government protests.

Perjury case against Thaksin

The Criminal Court starts five days of hearings today on a complaint of perjury against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The complaint was brought by United States cable television owner William Monson - a former partner of Thaksin in the former broadcaster IBC.

He has accused Thaksin of giving false evidence in court in a related civil case.

Monson and Thaksin have been involved in five legal actions since 1989.

The first was brought by Monson accusing Thaksin and IBC of breaking a joint-venture contract and failing to transfer the rights to operate IBC to Monson's Thailand company, Video Link.
