Guard rights, says Amnesty

Amnesty International yesterday condemned Saturday night's bombings in Hat Yai and called for protection of human rights in southern Thailand.

"The latest bombings in Hat Yai, involving the death and injury of innocent people, again highlights the urgent need to bring an end to violence in southern Thailand," said a statement issued at the biannual Asia-Pacific Amnesty International Forum meeting in Bangkok.

The group said they condemned violent acts against civilians by armed groups in southern Thailand and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice in accordance with established human-rights standards.

They also called on the Thai government to immediately amend or repeal the Emergency Decree and other elements of legislation which may authorise government officials to violate human-rights standards.

"Amnesty International urges the Thai government to implement the use of peaceful means recommended by the National Reconciliation Commission," the statement read.

The group also urged the government to implement the recommendations of the United Nations Human Rights Committee (under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights) put forward in July 2005.
