TRT pledges better railways

The Thai Rak Thai Party is promising to build "mass-transit" systems nationwide and drag the state rail service into the black.

Party member Ladawan Wongsriwong said yesterday that if returned to power, Thai Rak Thai would speed up nationwide train journeys by making the main trunk line dual track.

She revealed the rail plan after a party working-group briefing from Transport Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal and Energy Minister Viset Choopiban.

She reported Pongsak insisted the government would push ahead with plans to build 10 new routes for the capital's mass-transit rail system.

He also intended to start mass-transit systems in the other 75 provinces.

"Pongsak said the Transport Ministry would reverse State Railway of Thailand operations from loss to profit," she said.

"Importantly, the government will invest in a dual-track rail system, in order to speed up national train services," she said.
