Group discusses better customs

As the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting this year, the Vietnam General Department of Customs last week held the Apec Customs-Business Dialogue on the topic of ensuring a strong business environment by promoting cooperation between customs and industry.

The dialogue was held September 5-8 within the framework of the third Apec senior officials' meeting in central Da Nang and Hoi An from September 6-17.

The aim of the dialogue was to provide information on customs procedures to businesses as well as strengthen mutual understanding between customs and businesses.

The dialogue was a valuable opportunity for customs officials and the business community to promote cooperation, creating favourable conditions for trade in the region said Kunio Mikuriya, deputy secretary of the World Customs Organisation (WCO). - The Nation/Agencies.

Gem show

The Commerce Ministry expects the 38th Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair to generate at least Bt30 billion in foreign exchange income.

At the opening ceremony yesterday, Commerce Minister Somkid Jatusirpitak said the fair was expected to achieve average sales of Bt4 billion-Bt5 billion a day.

Somkid added that the export value of gems and jewellery is expected to reach US$3.5 to $3.6 billion (Bt130-134) this year.

The ministry reported that the country's gems and jewellery exports grew by 20 per cent to $2.07 billion during the first seven months this year. Major export markets include the US, Japan and Australia. - The Nation.

Tourism grows

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Strategic Intelligence Centre reported yesterday that international visitor arrivals in the Asia-Pacific region in 2005 grew 7.6 per cent from the year prior.

The report was released yesterday during PATA Travel Mart 2006 being held in Hong Kong. Since 2001, arrivals have grown at an average annual rate of 6 per cent.- The Nation.

LSN expands

LPN Development Plc will launch its latest condominium project on Pinklao Road worth Bt1.2 billion. Lumpini Pinklao II will focus on the middle market, said managing director Opas Sriprayak.

After Lumpini Pinklao I sold out in the first half of this year, customer demand for this location has shown strong growth, leading the company to launch a new project, Opas said.

The company will hold pre-sales for the new project from this Friday to next Thursday. - The Nation.
