Yala bomb, shooting

A shop owner was shot dead yesterday and seven security officials injured by a bomb at the crime scene in the latest violence by insurgents in the deep South.

Krittika Boonrak, 43, was found lying in a pool of blood in her grocery shop in Yala's Muang district. She had been shot in the head, body and arms and was pronounced dead in hospital.  Police said the attack occurred around midday.

An hour later a bomb went off in the shop while bomb experts and police were examining the crime scene.

Police said the bomb was meant to cause deaths and was detonated remotely by cell phone.

Elsewhere in the province, a rubber tapper was shot while riding his motorbike to work.

Duwanlee Kooboola, 54, was riding to a plantation in Muang district when an unknown number of suspected insurgents fired at him. He was hit once in his left.

More than 1,700 people have been killed since violence erupted in the three southernmost provinces in January 2004.
