IN BRIEF
PAD plans to hold rally in university auditorium in view of threats

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has chosen Chiang Mai University as the venue for its rally in the northern city later this month in order to avoid a clash with government supporters, the group's local representatives said yesterday.

With a capacity of 10,000 and its exclusive nature, the university's auditorium is perfect for the event, said Chompunut Thosinthiti, from a local group allied with the PAD.

She said a request for the use of the auditorium would be filed with the university today. "We expect to get permission," she said.

Many banners with messages threatening the PAD and its leaders were hung near Chiang Mai's old city walls last week. The city is the political stronghold of Thai Rak Thai Party leader Thaksin Shinawatra, who is a native of the province.

Suriyan Thongnu-iad, another local PAD representative, said the group would ask for police and soldiers to provide security at the rally, which will be attended by all five PAD leaders and its spokesman, Suriyasai Katasila.

Weather :Heavy rain expected in several areas

Several provinces in the North and Northeast were due for heavy rains overnight and today, the weather bureau said yesterday.

A cold front from China passing over the lower North, upper Central and lower Northeast regions could bring heavy rain to several provinces, Meteorological Department warned.

Meanwhile, heavy downpours were reported last night in Uttaradit, with floodwaters rising as high as one metre.
