Month of travels for PM

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will spend most of this month travelling to two continents to attend summit meetings.
Thaksin starts his overseas trip today with an official stopover at Tajikistan en route to Finland. The visit to Tajikistan reciprocates a visit by Tajik President Emomali Rahmonov in August last year. Foreign Ministry spokesman Kitti Wasinondh said: "Thaksin's trip to Tajikistan is aimed at boosting bilateral relations. It is in keeping with Thailand's policy of strengthening ties with Central Asia." Tomorrow, the caretaker prime minister will travel to Helsinki to attend a summit of Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem). The meeting would focus on trade, concerns over human rights abuses in Burma, joint efforts to tackle terrorism, global warming and energy issues. Thaksin returns to Bangkok on Tuesday. Three days later he travels to Cuba to attend the Non-Aligned Movement (Nam) summit. Thailand joined the 116-member Nam group in 1993. The theme of this year's summit is "Toward a More Dynamic and Cohesive Nam". Topics to be discussed include UN reforms, terrorism and Middle East conflicts. Thaksin is scheduled to attend bilateral meetings with Cuba, Congo, Peru, Ghana, Qatar and Egypt. He and his entourage will then travel north to New York for the 61st UN General Assembly scheduled from September 17 to 21. He will join other world leaders in reviewing progress during a High-level Plenary Meeting. This year leaders will speak on: "Implementing a Global Partnership for Development". The caretaker PM returns to Bangkok on September 22. -
