Govt unveils alternative cell phone downloads

To counter the trend of people downloading obscene photos and ring tones onto their cell phones, the Culture Ministry has begun offering free downloads of pictures by national artists and ring tones created by musicians of the Fine Arts Department.
Culture Ministry Permanent Secretary Khunying Dhipavadee Meksawan told a press conference yesterday that the background and screensaver images and about 50 ring tones are available for the public to download free of charge at www.m-culture.go.th/ringtone. The images, which include pictures of traditional wall paintings, Buddha images and artefacts created by 90 national and contemporary artists, will be changed every month, she said. A Mathayom 6 student of Sri Ayutthaya School, Jirapas Yakhasem, said this was a good project and would soon become popular as it brought Thai culture to what most high-school students already liked to do - downloading pictures and tunes onto their cell phones. The many rare pictures available online would also assist them in their homework and reports on Thai culture, she added.
