Review of varsity rankings

The Office of Higher Education Commission (Ohec) will review and, if necessary, revise its ranking of the country's top universities in response to loud complaints from several academics.
"If necessary, a new list will be made and released in the next two months," caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang said yesterday. Ohec recently compiled the first-ever ranking of Thailand's universities after asking them to submit information about their institutes, students and lecturers. Only 51 of 138 universities in the country sent the information requested by Ohec. Thammasat University was prominent among the institutions that decided not to respond to Ohec's request. Chaturon said he had received complaints about the ranking criteria from many university presidents. He had therefore set up a committee to collect information and opinions from relevant parties before making recommendations to Ohec on how to improve the criteria. Chaturon said he supported the idea of ranking universities and hinted that an organisation might be set up in future specifically for this purpose. The Nation
