Sondhi in open letter to Prem

People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leader Sondhi Limthongkul yesterday submitted an open letter to the chief adviser to His Majesty the King, criticising the Thaksin Shinawatra regime for causing national discord.

Sondhi said he wanted to bring the plight of the people to the attention of General Prem Tinsulanonda, president of the Privy Council.

"I have to do something because the Thaksin regime has triggered unprecedented social divide," he said.

It alleged that Thaksin was trying to gain control of the country for his self-serving interests by tampering with the system of checks and balances. It said Thaksin had interfered with the military line-up in order to rally the armed forces to help him hold power instead of safeguarding the nation. It also warned that the country was heading for civil war and bloodshed if Thaksin was allowed to cling to power.

In a rebuttal, the Thai Rak Thai Party lashed out at Sondhi for trying to involve Gen Prem in his bickering with the government.
