More CCTV in Bangkok

The Royal Thai Police have given the go ahead to install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems at 77 Bangkok intersections while also equipping 30 large intersections with sensor-equipped cameras to photograph vehicles running red lights, a senior police officer said yesterday.

Following a two-hour meeting, Traffic Police Area 4 superintendent Colonel Panumas Boonyalak said that in addition to some 60 existing systems, the Royal Thai Police would allocate Bt300 million to procure and install more CCTVs at 77 traffic control locations to help city traffic flows. So far, seven such spots had been completed, he said.

The Royal Thai Police also approved a budget of Bt170 million to install red-light cameras at 30 intersections. Panumas said five had so far been installed.

The red-light sensors can show the licence plate, enabling police to deliver a warrant - and the evidence - to the violator and demand a traffic fine, Panumas said, adding that the two projects would be completed in a year.the nation
