Workers registered Oct 1

Some 10,000 Burmese workers will be registered to fill positions that Thai workers are unwilling to fill starting on October 1, caretaker Labour Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said yesterday.
The first 1,000 workers will enter Thailand soon after the designated date, and the remaining workers will gradually trickle in over the following months. Most of them will work on fishing trawlers and at seafood-processing factories, where Thai workers tend not to want to work. Thai employers in need of Burmese labourers can register as of September 1 to secure quotas from the Employment Department. Registration is free, but those who want to speed up the process can pay Bt3,800 in advance for the workers' passports and mandatory medical check-ups. Details obtained after a previous registration found that 177,226 Thai employers wanted to hire 1,087,834 migrant workers. At the same time, 13,487 migrant workers entering Thailand illegally were arrested and 7,354 of them are now being prosecuted.
