Entrance route 'must be specified'

Students who apply for university seats through both the direct quota and central admission systems and are accepted will automatically lose their seats under the quota system if they do not decide which system to accept by February 7, a member of the Council of University Rectors of Thailand said yesterday.
Prof Dr Somphol Phongthai said the council's decision was meant to prevent seats granted under the direct quota system from being wasted. Students who choose to be accepted under the central admission system often fail to inform universities that they would not be pursuing their education under the direct quota system. Applications for the direct quota system will be accepted from October 9 to November 17. The admissions examination is scheduled for December 16. The names of those who pass the test will be posted on February 7 at www.mahidol.ac.th/admission/quota2007. Under the council's new policy, each university will be required to send the names of students who are accepted under both the quota and central admission systems. The names of those who fail to decide by February 7 which system they want to use will be crossed out automatically from the direct quota system. These students will have to reapply under the central system in the next round, Somphol said.
