LATE NEWS
Rayong seeks investment

The Rayong Chamber of Commerce is speeding up discussions with government authorities to prepare for an increase in the number of tourists to the eastern province following the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Chamber president Prachya Samalabha said the province needs more investment in infrastructure and clearer planning on logistics and transportation to welcome more investment. He said that during the last quarter of the year at least four million tourists should visit the province.

Meanwhile, Pattaya also expects the number of tourists to increase by one million per annum after Suvarnabhumi is fully operational. - The Nation.

Kempinski to open in Khao Lak

Kempinski Hotels, Europe's oldest luxury hotel group, will manage a hotel in Khao Lak as its second property in Thailand in addition to a five-star hotel in Bangkok.

The resort in Khao Lak is under construction and scheduled to open its first phase in 2007.

"The Khao Lak region is attracting tourists once more, with a number of resorts already reopened," Kempinski president and CEO Reto Wittwer said in a press release. "Kempinski is pleased to be part of the recovery of Khao Lak after the 2004 tsunami. With the Khao Lak resort, we can offer our guests the chance to experience the grace and elegance of traditional Thai hospitality." - The Nation.

VN, Laos, Thai agree deals

Vietnam, Laos and Thailand reached a series of cooperative trade and investment agreements at the recent 10th Joint Commission of Cooperation held in Laos' central province of Khammouane.

At the commission, delegates from the Borikhamsay and Khammouane provinces of Laos; Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces of Viet Nam; and Nakhon Phanom, Sakhon Nakhon and Nong Khai provinces of Thailand discussed ways to exploit Road No 8, which runs through these provinces.

The delegates agreed to the construction of a cultural centre at the km 20 point of the road in Thailand's Buri Ram province, with financial contributions from the other provinces. The delegates also agreed to create facilitated and streamlined conditions for export and import through border gates of the three countries. Each country will hold fairs in the other two countries to promote their goods and opportunities for investment, tourism and trade.

The commission offered the seven provinces a chance to discuss their strengths in attracting investment. - Viet Nam News, Asia News Network.
