PAD wins deferment

The Office of the Attorney General yesterday postponed a decision on whether to try five leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy on charges relating to street protests.

The OAG set a new date - October 5 - to rule on the matter.

The five are Sondhi Limthongkul, Chamlong Srimuang, Somkiart Pongpaiboon, Somsak Kosaisuk and Pipop Thongchai. A police report alleged the five organised the protests to overthrow democracy.

The OAG also agreed to delay until September 27 the issuing of a prosecution order on a lese majeste case against Sondhi. This would allow him time to secure bail should prosecutors decide to try him.

Police charged him with making remarks offensive to His Majesty the King. If it comes to a trial, Kom Chad Luek newspaper, a sister publication of The Nation, and its editor, Chalaew Kongtuk, would be named fellow-defendants for publishing the remarks.
