Maenam gets gold

[TAEKWONDO] Maenam Cherdkiartsak was awarded the World University Taekwondo Championship gold medal yesterday after it was found that Kim Suek-mee of South Korea had failed a dope test.

Maenam lost in the finweight final to Kim 4-3 at the tournament in May in Valencia, Spain.

However, Kim's urine sample tested positive, prompting the World Taekwondo Federation to strip her of the title.

Dr Nat Indrapana, president of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand (TAT) and vice president of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), said: "It's not fair for Maenam to compete against someone using drugs. There is no way she could win if that was the case."

The TAT protested to the International Sports University Federation (FISU). After two-days of deliberation, FISU decided to give Maenam the gold medal instead.

Maenam is now recovering from knee surgery and hopes to be fit to compete again in December's Asian Games in Doha.
