Highlights of the week :Senate seeks special session

The Senate will seek permission for a special session so it can vote for new election commissioners.
Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua will submit the request for the session to the Cabinet today. Once it receives approval, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will submit a request for a royal endorsement. However, a date for the session is still to be set and the Senate may not convene until after September 11, in spite of the urgency of appointing a new Election Commission.
Decision on judges Constitution Court judges will decide if 13 of their number should withdraw from the ruling on a definition of properly qualified National Counter Corruption Commission nominees. The judges will tomorrow consider an argument submitted by outgoing Buri Ram Senator Karun Sai-ngam opposing the sitting of 13 of the 15 judges. Karun contends that 13 judges accused of illegally increasing their own pay should withdraw, as the incoming NCCC is scheduled to consider the case.
Protests continue Anti-Thaksin Shinawatra protests are set to continue throughout the week. A founder member of the Civil Society Network to Stop the Thaksin System (CSNSTS), Assoc Prof Sangsit Piriyarangsan, urged government opponents nationwide to don yellow on Saturday, September 9 to coincide with a rally in Bangkok.
