University rating list backfires

A recent ranking of local universities by the Commission of Higher Education (CHE) has caused concern among students studying at the institutions at the bottom of the list, an Abac Poll survey released yesterday showed.

Of 1,152 respondents surveyed on September 1-2 by Assumption University, 72.8 per cent said the CHE's ranking would make it more difficult for them to find jobs after their prospective employers learned they came from universities at the bottom of the list.

But most of them, 66.5 per cent, said they were still proud of their institutes and 69 per cent still had confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Pollster Noppadol Kannikar said the CHE should apologise to the students and take responsibility for the ranking, which he said had a negative effect rather than being useful and productive.

Of the respondents, 39.3 per cent said the ranking was unscientific and not based on proper survey criteria. Another 23.6 per cent said they accepted the results, while 37.1 preferred not to comment.
