Police seek four army officers for questioning on plot against PM

Police submitted on Monday a request to the army seeking permission to question four officers for conspiring in an alleged assassination plot against Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra last month.
Police will wait until Thursday and then issue arrest warrants against the four officers for premeditated murder and illegal possession of explosives, said Pol Lt Gen Montree Jamroon, chief investigator said. On Aug 24, police found a bomb-laden car near Thaksin's residence in Bangplat district. They arrested Lt Thawatchai Klinchana, the driver, for possessing explosives and linked him to the assassination plot against the prime minister. Authorities said Thawatchai's car was carrying a powerful bomb that could have caused significant damage within a 1 kilometre radius. Speculation has mounted over the incident, which Thaksin described as an attempt on his life. Thai media questioned whether the alleged plot was an attempt by the embattled government to divert attention from other issues and win sympathy. The Nation
