Feline fantasies and realities

The folks at Ozono are offering a treat for cat lovers tomorrow. Starting at around 4pm, you'll have the opportunity to view "Garfield 2: A Tail of Two Kitties", gorge yourself on popcorn, barbecue and cotton candy, confer with qualified vets on problems your feline friends face and even check out kittens available for adoption.
Ozono owner Dhanesha K also plans to auction personal items of well-known celebrities, with all proceeds going to the care and upkeep of rescued cats. Dhanesha re-located his Doggie Bag from Soi Thonglor to the five-rai Ozono complex on Sukhumvit Soi 39 last May. With its restaurants, coffeeshops, boutiques, beauty salons and even a bank, Ozono itself is pet-friendly. You can take your dog into any one of these establishments, especially the kitty boutique and hotel Cat Societe, doggie boutique Doggie Bag, doggie hotel Petropolitan and the dog-run Petropolis Park. Tomorrow, though, Dhanesha will have added an outdoor theatre to screen the film and set up a booth for Tharinee "Carrie" Wipuchanin of the dog (and cat) rescue group Pic-A-Pet4Home. She's offering T-shirts, bags and other collectibles and will have also brought along two vets who will provide advice and vaccinations at reasonable prices. Initially aiming to rescue only dogs, Carrie has ended up with kittens as well. Some people abandon whatever species they have wherever they can. Carrie has found kittens dumped in boxes on the street, in temples and in container yards. People have even thrown the babies over the gate into her garden, home to nearly 100 dogs now. Dhanesha too has found kittens abandoned outside Cat Societe. He's had them examined by his vet and vaccinated, although he's finding it difficult to give any of the kittens away. Once a confirmed dog-lover, he's become a confirmed cat-lover as well. His Cat Societe is home to 10 cats, including Yomsri, a white beauty with a few black spots. Readers may remember Yomsri. Before she was born, two people rescued her mother from a shop in Chinatown. They thought the cat was dying, but under the care of a vet, she not only recovered but also gave birth to three kittens, one of whom was Yomsri. Dhanesha, who fell in love with Yomsri's photo, promptly adopted her and through the year, I've watched her grow into a beautiful lady. In Dhanesha's mind, though, she's still a little kitten. Thai cats are mature enough to give birth at five months old. Yomsri was a bit past 12 months, when Dhanesha realised she was pregnant. She blessed him with five kittens last June, and though he'd love to keep them, he's wise enough to accept that Cat Societe already has enough cats. Yes, the kids are up for adoption, but before you take one home tomorrow, you're going to have to convince Dhanesha that your home is perfect for his children. He's a doting dad, after all. Ozono is located on Sukhumvit Soi 39. As you enter from Phetchburi, it's a bit past the bridge. The compound also has an ample carpark. For more information, call (02) 259 2788.
