50 years for murderer

A beggar who doused his homeless ex-girlfriend with petrol and set her alight in front of Lumpini Park earlier this year was sentenced to 50 years in jail by the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court yesterday.
The court initially imposed the death sentence on 41-year-old Chalermsak Phochareon for the brutal murder of 35-year-old Chanida Niyompanich - but later reduced the punishment on the grounds that his confession was useful to the case. On January 9 at about 3am, Chalermsak poured petrol on Chanida and set her alight while she was sleeping on a footpath. Although she was immediately rushed to nearby Chulalongkorn Hospital, Chanida suffered burns to 90 per cent of her body and was pronounced dead on arrival. It was later revealed the victim had been the wife of a rich businessman upcountry with two kids before she reportedly ran away to live a homeless life in Bangkok.
