In Brief :Manus given ultimatum

The Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand (Abat) gave an ultimatum to 2004 Olympic gold medallist Manus Boonjumnong to shed three kilos within three weeks or be dropped from the national squad bound for the Asian Games in December.
Manus, a national hero after winning the men's light-welterweight in the Athens Olympics, weighs about 70kg, whereas 67kg is the maximum weight in the event. Abat gave him until September 15 to reduce the excess weight.
Thais down Thailand went down to hosts Malaysia 2-1 in the Merdeka Cup at the Shah Alam Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Malaysia broke the ice first in the 45th minute before Thailand fought back in the second half to level at 1-1. Malaysia scored the match-winner in the 85th minute and now have a good chance of playing in the final. Thailand need to win the last round robin tomorrow against Indonesia for a chance to be in the final.In another match, Burma and Indonesia drew goalless.
Boonsak loses It was a day of disappointment for Thai players as they ended their journey at the quarter-final stage of the US$300,000 Korea Open in Seoul yesterday. Thai ace Boonsak Ponsana went down to Athens Olympic silver medallist Shon Seung-mo of South Korea 21-18 21-13 in the men's singles event. In the women's singles, Thai rising star Soratja Chansrisukot was upset by German world No 2 Xu Huaiwen 21-13 21-13.
