Saneh calls for national unity

The National Human Rights Commission has called on all parties, including the government, its opponents and the media, to unite to help bring about political reform and return the country to real democracy.

Its chairperson Saneh Chamarik said yesterday that peaceful and unarmed protest was a basic human right in a democratic country. Therefore, government officers, including the interior minister, should not obstruct opposition rallies.

However, those officers should stop people from hurting one another during protests, he said.

Saneh said he did not expect the government to respond, but wanted the public to urge it to follow democratic principles. Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra would then have to listen to them, he added.

The government should not use Tursday's alleged assassination plot against Thaksin as an excuse to use the Emergency Decree, as there was not just cause.
