Ascon to jointly bid for 3 rail projects

Ascon Construction Plc is ready to submit a joint bid to build three new mass-transit electric rail lines, having successfully found three new partners from China, Germany and Japan, company president Pattanapong Tanumathaya said yesterday.

The government announced the time frame last week for the construction of the Bt150-billion transportation project.

Pattanapong said the bid was part of Ascon Construction's plan to expand its business interests from the private sector to the public sector and construction mega-projects.

The company's main experience so far has been building offices and manufacturing outlets rather than infrastructure ventures. About 60 per cent of its revenue currently comes from the private sector.

Pattanapong said that if they win the bidding to build any of the rail lines, it would pave the way for joint bidding for other mega-projects in the future.

"We may not have a track record for constructing mega-projects but our partners have long experience in this area, and as a result we believe we should win the bidding," he said.

At present the company is working on construction projects worth Bt3.8 billion to be completed by year-end. It estimates its overall revenue will achieve targeted growth of up to 10 per cent this year.

Ascon Construction yesterday announced revenue Bt496.07 million and net profit of Bt49.38 million for the first half of the year. It posted revenue of Bt824.92 million and net profit of Bt72.15 million for the whole of last year.
