Dhurakij Pundit prove to be too good

Dhurakij Pundit University handed King Mongkut's Institute of Technology University North Bangkok their third straight loss with a 63-45 victory in their Group A preliminary match in the Bt140,000 The Nation-Siam University League Tournament yesterday.

Earlier, hosts King Mongkut's Institute of Technology University North Bangkok lost to Rangsit University 87-60 and hot favourites Thammasat University 90-78. The visitors defeated Thammasat University 77-74 and also went down 67-61 in last week's matches.

Both sides attacked from the start, but the visitors played better to take a 21-13 lead. Dhurakij Pundit University brought in talented national team player Piyapong Piroon, who added several points for the team for a 31-21 half-time lead.

However, hosts King Mongkut's Institute of Technology University North Bangkok played the full-court press and started marking their men, which helped them narrow the gap to 31-33.

The hosts' Somsak Phoophueng also sank three straight three-pointers to help his team erase the slim lead.

However the hosts, playing under pressure, missed many important shots, which allowed the Dhurakij Pundit side to ran away to a 43-33 win.

In the final period, the weary visitors patiently waited for turnovers and fought back to move away before Dhurakij Pundit wrapped up an away victory.

Dhurakij Pundit University's Jakkrapan Sillapaphipat top scored with 14 points, while Kittisak Sukkasem scored 17 points to be the hosts' top scorer.

Today Rattana Bundit University take on Bangkok University in their second Group B match, while Dhurakij Pundit University will face Rangsit University in their first meeting in Group A.
