July casualties

More than 1,200 companies nationwide went under in July, most of them in the construction and property development sectors.

Dusit Uchupongamourn, deputy director-general of the Business Development Department, said the 1,275 companies that went out of business during July represented a 4.94-per-cent increase over the number reported during the same period last year. Their combined registered capital was Bt63.98 billion.

Of the total, 641 of the companies were registered in Bangkok.

The increase in closures comes amid signs of economic difficulty sparked by higher operating costs and dwindling consumer confidence.

Meanwhile, 3,882 companies were registered in July, down 6 per cent from the same period last year, but up 2.56 per cent month-on-month. Among the new companies are plastic parts maker Thai Fuji Plastic Co Ltd and Siam Airline Co Ltd.
