Highlights of the week :Senate committee to assess findings on EC candidates' backgrounds

The Senate committee set up to check the backgrounds of the Election Commission (EC) candidates will meet today to discuss information received from related agencies and complaints filed by the public against the candidates.
The committee will continue its deliberations over the next two days before summoning the candidates for clarification on Thursday.
Women's group to meet Banharn Representatives from the women's activist group WEMOVE will meet Chat Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa today to hear the party's policies for the election and for political reform to create a society with gender equality.
Suchon seeking court ruling on nominees Caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua will approach the Constitution Court this week for a ruling on whether five nominees for the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) are properly qualified. Under the Constitution, NCCC nominees must have held the civil service rank of director-general or equivalent. The five nominees in question are National Economic Social and Development Board deputy secretary-general Santi Bang-or, Deputy Auditor-General Sajja Sasanawin, Basic Education Commission deputy secretary-general Areerat Watanasin, National Police Commission assistant commissioner Lt-General Wanchai Srinualnad and former Suan Sunantha Rajabhat University rector Dilok Bunruangrod.
Abhisit off to Asean leadership forum Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva will participate in the Asean 100 Leadership Forum being held in Indonesia on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss solving political, economic and social problems in Asia. The forum is by invitation only and aims to build relationships among 100 emerging leaders in government, business and civil society from Southeast Asia who are expected to influence the region's business and politics in the next five years. The forum provides an international platform for Abhisit to show his plans for the country's administration.
Election office to check on poll officials A sub-committee set up by the Office of the Election Commission will this week scrutinise the qualifications of candidates for election directors and constituency election commissioners, in the run up to the October 15 election. The sub-committee will report to the incoming election commissioners, who will make the appointments.
