Ruangroj vows to investigate

The Armed Forces Supreme Commander, General Ruangroj Mahasaranont, has ordered an investigation into all parties involved in the drowning deaths of three students at the Military Technological Training School during an underwater welding drill on Tuesday.
"I will ensure justice for all parties. As long as I am the Supreme Commander, I will ensure that the investigation is conducted transparently," Ruangroj said yesterday. He said he was deeply saddened by the students' deaths, which were unprecedented at the Military Technological Training School. "This is an expensive lesson. The school will have to improve its safety standards," Ruangroj said. Lt-General Palangkoon Klaharn, the Royal Thai Army's director-general of civil affairs, offered condolences to the student's families. "This was an accident. No one wanted it to happen," he said. A police autopsy yesterday determined the deaths were caused by drowning. School officials have speculated the three students were secretly practising the welding drill in the five-metre-deep water tank during a lunch break without supervision at the time of their deaths. But their parents do not believe the school's account and have threatened to take legal action if the school does not take responsibility.
