Junta changes its mind

Burma has retracted its earlier commitment to pay compensation for shooting at a Thai helicopter over Mae Hong Son last month.

Burmese officials told their Thai counterparts during a meeting of the Township Border Committee in Chiang Rai that Rangoon did not need to compensate for the damage as the helicopter had violated its airspace on July 10.

Colonel Somsak Nilbanjerdkul, head of the Thai delegation, said: "This move by the Burmese side has put the issue back to square one and we need to inform our government to protest and repeat our demand for compensation."

The Burmese retraction came just a week after caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made an unannounced trip to Burma.
