Watch fair exceeds mall's expectations

The Bangkok World Watch and Jewellery 2006 exhibition at Siam Paragon has been such a hit that the shopping complex's management raised its sales target for the show from the original Bt200 million to Bt300 million.
Siam Paragon is hosting the event, which ends on Monday, in its 40,000-square-metre hall, with 150 middle-range and high-end watches on display. Kriengsak Tantiphipop, chief marketing officer for Siam Paragon Development Co Ltd, part of The Mall Group, said yesterday that as of this past Wednesday, the event had welcomed 70,000 visitors, 30 per cent of whom made total purchases worth Bt190 million. Locals made up 80 per cent of the visitors and foreigners the rest. He said another noticeable trend in this event was that it had attracted many who were previously not interested in this type of show, particularly whole families attending. Patek Philippe and Guess watches are the best sellers. Patek Philippe's popular watches range in price from Bt200,000 to Bt1 million, and Guess' popular models go for Bt10,000 to Bt60,000. Like Patek Philippe, sophisticated watches of other brands have experienced good sales at the show. Limited-edition watches of several brands have already sold out, and others are almost out of stock. Kriengsak said many brands might have difficulties asking their headquarters to raise quotas for limited editions to meet the high demand of customers here. To promote the event further, Siam Paragon has added Bt10 million to the original Bt50-million advertising budget.
