Loans hit Bt1.7 bn

The Student Loan Fund has already approved loans worth Bt1.77 billion to 111,455 students of higher education institutes this year.

The fund expects to review about 200,000 more applications in the next two weeks.

"We will process applications urgently to ensure sound cash flow for higher education institutes," the manager of the Student Loan Fund, Prempracha Supasamout, said yesterday.

This year marks the launch of a new funding scheme for higher education, known as Income Contingent Loans (ICLs). The loans are available to all students regardless of their financial status. Previously, loans were given only to cash-strapped students. However, the ICLs carry interest rates based on standard inflation rates.

Students apply for the loans via their universities. Prempracha said the fund had received applications from 199 higher education institutes.
