Big firms asked to stop supporting PM

A civic group campaigning against the Thaksin administration began its push yesterday to persuade large businesses to stop supporting the caretaker prime minister.

Representatives from the Civil Society Network to Stop the Thaksin System submitted an open letter to the consumer conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group (CP).

Sangsit Piriyarangsan, leader of the group, presented the letter to a senior CP executive, who accepted

it on behalf of CP chief Dhanin Chearavanont, who is one of the country's richest men.

The anti-Thaksin group plans to visit GMM Grammy next, then Thai Beverage, with the same request.

Sangsit said the letter sent to CP called for the company to help restore moral values for society and build political, economic and social systems regulated by virtue.

He also asked CP to stay neutral in politics and to not support Thaksin until his administration was "finished" in a peaceful way. He said the group hoped business groups, police, the military and financial institutions that support Thaksin would realise what was good for the country.

The group distributed a hand-book to passers-by on Silom Road.
