Senate decree now endorsed

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday he has endorsed the royal decree to open a special Senate session on August 15.

Cabinet secretary-general Rongphol Charoenphanthu said he would forward the decree for royal endorsement.

Meanwhile, caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua notified the Cabinet secretariat that the Senate wants the special session on August 15 to select the National Counter Corrup-tion Commission. The Senate also has to select five of 10 people nominated by Supreme Court judges to become Election Commissioners.

Rongphol said Thaksin had the right to endorse the royal decree without a Cabinet resolution, because after a Cabinet meeting in 2005, Article 7 of the royal decree allowed him to implement normal routines.

Rongpol said he would forward the decree to Cabinet for acknowledgement next Tuesday. He said the PM had earlier endorsed the decree to organise the general election on October 15.
