Bangkok to stage major health meet

Leading doctors and health experts from around the world are expected in Thailand early next year for an international conference being staged by the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation.
The event, on February 1 and 2, will be jointly hosted by the World Health Organisation and the Rockerfeller and Bill Gates foundations. It has been titled "Improving Access to Essential Technologies: Focusing on Neglected Diseases, Reaching Neglected Populations". Top medics, health experts, scientists and officials from around the globe will attend, said Professor Supat Vanichakarn, the secretary-general of the award foundation. The conference will commemorate the 115th birthday of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkhla, and the 15th anniversary of the prestigious Prince Mahidol Awards. The Prince Mahidol Award is conferred annually by His Majesty the King to individuals or institutions for outstanding work and research in the fields of medicine and public health. The award was established in 1992. The "Father of Thai Modern Medicine and Public Health" had graduated with degrees in both public health and medicine from Harvard University. Some 59 outstanding medical doctors and scientists from around the world have been nominated for the next award. Winning nominees will be selected by a specialist international committee chaired by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
