Standard on the drawing board

The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec), in collaboration with the Thai Embedded System Association, will develop a technology standard for agritronics products.

Nectec researcher Rachaporn Keinprasit said the organisations were in the process of drafting standard specifications, with the first draft out in the next few months. Since the use of agritronics involves sensor technology, wireless data transmission and interoperability between devices, there was a need to define an open standard, so that local developers could build products.

The standard specified in first draft will be tested among local developers for its interoperability before it's released for technical specifications, and the end product - Version 1 - will be released by the end of the year.

However, to be on top of the technology market, the two organisations will revise their product frequently, adding new features and bringing out new versions.

Rachaporn said the centre also planned to market a software interface for agritronics to the open-source community, allowing developers to use it to improve their products further.
