Poonpat boys rule the waves in Hua Hin

[SAILING] The Poonpat brothers ruled the waves at the Hua Hin Regatta yesterday, winning the Super Mod Perpetual Vega Rudder Royal Trophy at the Hua Hin Naval Yacht Club.
The SuperMod class, the highlight of the event, featured 61 dinghies contesting the prestigious trophy and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of His Majesty the King's accession to the throne. After three races with the worst performance discounted, Wiwat Poonpat won the overall title and his young brother Sutee was second. First day leader Teerapong Watibunruang dropped to third place. In the bigger Platu class, Morten Jacobsen of Denmark took the honours after winning all three races, followed by Thailand's Pot Ruyasin and compatriot Worasaid Sa-ad-iam. A total of 68 boats contested the Optimist class. Ponpet Suk-udom made a slow start but was in superb form yesterday to top the class. Hot on his heels was Noppakao Poonpat and Supakorn Pongvichean, who finished second and third respectively. Three more races will be contested in the Optimist class today, while 24 boats, including seven 420s and four each in the Platu and Laser classes, will take part in the long-distance race covering 60 nautical miles with the winner receiving the Perpetual Vega Rudder Royal Trophy. The awarding ceremony will take place this evening at the Sofitel Central Hua Hin Hotel, with Privy Councillor ML Usni Pramoj as the guest of honour.
