Senate to debate NCCC, EC places

The Senate is scheduled to reconvene on August 15 to start debating appointments to two crucial bodies - the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) and the Election Commission (EC).
"The debate will be expedited to finish ahead of the new election on October 15," caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua said yesterday. The report on the credentials of 18 NCCC candidates will be ready for debate by Monday and the Supreme Court is expected to submit the names of 10 EC candidates by August 10, Suchon said. In order to speed up the appointment proceedings, the Senate will debate the two sets of appointments concurrently, he said. Suchon said he was optimistic that the Senate could vote to select five EC candidates for royal approval in time for the new commissioners to complete necessary preparations for the new election. "The Senate will not bypass the vetting of EC candidates' credentials, although it will do it in a speedy manner," he said.
