Non-formal students' marks low

Close to 90,000 non-formal education students sat the school evaluation test last year but their results were nothing special, officials said yesterday.
The average mark for the 2005 evaluation test for non-formal students was only 13.96 out of a full mark of 40, Sombat Suwanpitak, director of the Office of the Non-Formal Education Commission (NFEC) said. Some 89,771 students sat the test in the lower secondary school level. There were five subjects - Thai language, social and community development, science, maths and English. No figures were available late yesterday on the number of students (or proportion) who passed and failed. Average marks for science and social and community development were higher than those from the 2004 test, but marks for other subjects were lower than 2004. The average mark for science was 20.88 - up from 18.48 in 2004, while the average mark for social and community development was 22.41 - up from 20.32 in 2004. The average mark for Thai language was 16.41 - down from 18.58 in 2004, while the average mark for English was 13.69 - down from 14.18 in 2004. The test results would help improve the quality of non-formal education, Sombat said. Students who undertake non-formal education are often mature-age people or youngsters unable to attend normal schools. - The Nation
