Groups warns PM not to campaign

An anti-government group in Khon Kaen plans to stage a protest against caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra when he begins his two-day tour of the north-eastern province on Monday.
The Network of Khon Kaen People for Democracy views Thaksin's trip to the Northeast as an attempt to woo support ahead of the general election, the group's leader Suntharee Hatthi Sengking said yesterday. She said the tour was aimed at restoring the sagging popularity of Thaksin and his Thai Rak Thai Party. Suntharee said her group, which is allied with the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy, would record Thaksin's trip to Khon Kaen to determine later whether he does anything in violation of electoral law. Thaksin on Tuesday announced his plan to visit government projects in north-eastern and northern provinces. He is scheduled to fly to Khon Kaen on Monday morning. On Tuesday he will take part in a teleconference session with governors of 19 north-eastern provinces and Cabinet members in Bangkok. He is scheduled to visit Chiang Mai from August 14 to 17.
