VN body wants sugar imports halted The Vietnam Sugar and Sugar-cane Association has petitioned the government to suspend sugar imports until the end of the year. The association said the request was made as the domestic market had adequate supplies. An earlier request was turned down, because of sporadic supplies resulting in volatile pricing. The Trade Ministry had initially predicted the 2005-06 growing season would end with a shortfall of 300,000-350,000 tonnes, and therefore 150,000 tonnes of sugar were allowed to be imported. The ministry's Trade Information Centre says 98,000 tonnes of sugar have been imported so far this year, mostly from Thailand, Malaysia and Poland. - Viet Nam News/Asia News Network.
