PM 'alienating civil servants'

A research paper claims that government officials are losing their self-esteem under the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, as they feel reduced to mere "company employees" and even "lackeys" of politicians.

Walaiporn Rattanaset, an independent academic, said Thaksin treated the government as his company and alienated officials through initiatives such as CEO governors, PEO ambassadors and fast-track programmes.

Thaksin appointed former senior bureaucrats who could respond to his political demands to serve him and control current bureaucrats, she said.

"State officials are short of pride, without self-esteem and feel more like company employees rather than civil servants of His Majesty's government,'' she said.

Her paper was presented yesterday during a politics forum organised by King Prajadhipok's Institute. - Pravit Rojanaphruk, The Nation
