Asahi glass to slash production Asahi Glass Co is to cut its output of glass for use in cathode-ray tubes (CRTs) by 35 per cent this month, because of lower sales, falling prices and higher fuel and material costs. The tubes are used in television sets. The move will result in an extraordinary loss of about 10 billion yen (Bt3.3 billion) in the April-June quarter of the current business year. Asahi Glass will end all production of CRT glass at two group firms, in Indonesia and Taiwan, and shut down four furnaces elsewhere. The measures will cut by half the company's peak output reached in 2004. CRT glass components will continue to be made in Singapore, Thailand, China and South Korea, but the company warned that further restructuring measures might be carried out. Asahi Glass has already terminated production of CRT glass in Japan and the US. - The Daily Yomiuri/ANN.
