Women eye EC spots

A women's activist group yesterday proposed the names of Auditor-General Khunying Jaruvan Maintaka and 10 other women as candidates for the new Election Commission (EC) to Supreme Court secretary-general Charan Pakdithanakul.
A meeting of 86 Supreme Court judges will select 10 candidates and forward their names to the Senate, which will then have to choose five.WEMOVE coordinator Ratchadaporn Kaewsanit said Jaruvan and the 10 other women had agreed to stand as candidates. Among the other candidates the group proposed are Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, deputy director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, Dr Sutheera Vijitranond, president of the Gender and Development Research Institute, and Rewadee Prasertcharoensuk, president of the non-governmental organisations coordinating committee. Charan welcomed the nominations, saying that women were recognised for having an eye for detail and strong determination. "It is a good sign that women are interested in becoming EC commissioners. Supreme Court judges have never blocked women from having a chance in the process. I believe some women will be proposed as candidates," he said.
