Contempt accused ready to face court

A pro-government activist will today produce 13 of 16 people wanted for questioning by the Criminal Court on suspected contempt.
The chairman of a pro-government group calling itself the Northeastern Assembly for Constitution Protection said he would produce the wanted people before the court. Theppanom Siriwithayarak met with court secretary Than Bunyatulanont yesterday. He said he was acquainted with 13 out of 16 people summoned for questioning on acts considered contempt following the conviction of three former Election Commissioners on July 25. Theppanom knew the people through pro-government rallies outside both Government House and the Office of the Election Commission. He said they would defend themselves against the contempt allegations. "We support Thaksin Shinawatra and the Thai Rak Thai Party so we want to offer our support to them and the EC,'' he said. Theppanom said he and others would not contest the charges but would offer explanations for their actions. Theppanom, politician Chuwit Kamolvisit and Thana Benjathikul, a lawyer who represents Thaksin Shinawatra, are the other three wanted people. They will be asked to explain their actions at the court. Their actions were captured on videotape. Thana said yesterday he had no intention of offending the court and would explain himself today. Chuwit will be questioned about his act of bringing food and drink for the jailed trio and quarrelling with others outside the court building. He denied his gifts were a cynical act. He genuinely intended to visit the disgraced commissioners. A woman seen on the recording appeared at the Criminal Court yesterday to deny she was among the demonstrators. Identifying herself only as Mali she explained she was a passer by and lost her temper as she neared the rowdy protesters.
