Korn, Jatuporn to negotiate libel case out of court

A Democrat Party executive and a Thai Rak Thai Party deputy spokesman yesterday agreed to negotiate an out-of-court settlement in a libel case.
In an agreement with the Criminal Court, Democrat Korn Chatikavanij and Thai Rak Thai spokesman Jatuporn Phromphan have to reconcile their differences by September 11, or court proceedings will resume. The court battle began after Jatuporn alleged in February that Korn's father, Kraisri Chatikavanij, made a wrong decision to adjust the tariff rate for a batch of cars when he was director-general of the Customs Department. As plaintiff, Korn told the court that he was willing to drop the charges if Jatuporn agreed to hold a press conference to apologise for his remarks. "The allegation is groundless and it is fair for Jatuporn to issue an apology at his party headquarters where he made the remarks," said Korn. Jatuporn said he would have to seek his party's consent before he could reply to Korn's demand.
