King steps up his exercise programme

The Royal Household Bureau yesterday reported that His Majesty the King was continuing to recuperate well after spinal surgery and is now undergoing physiotherapy twice a day.

Because of the rapid improvement doctors have extended the amount of time His Majesty spends exercising, it said.

Meanwhile, a representative of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden was among the steady stream of people from all walks of life offering get-well messages for His Majesty the King at Siriraj Hospital yesterday.

Sweden's political and cultural affairs councillor to Thailand Ann Lundgren delivered the message from King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

She explained that their majesties had asked embassy staff to deliver their hopes for His Majesty's speedy recovery and continued good health. The royal couple also presented His Majesty with flower vases.

Thousands of people continued to flock to the hospital yesterday to offer His Majesty their regards and prayers and the Royal Household Bureau reported that 445,914 visitors had signed messages between July 21 to 30.

Hundreds of students from Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Chon Buri and Ayutthaya were at the hospital at 7am yesterday to wish His Majesty a speedy recovery. Following the students were the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a group of nine rabbis. They signed messages on behalf of the Thai citizens following their respective faiths.

At 12.25am Lt-General MR Somchanok Kritdakorn and others of royal lineage arrived to sign get-well messages. MR Somchanok said on August 6 and 7 the Navy would display a replica of His Majesty's "Super Mod" boat at an international regatta at Hua Hin.

In the afternoon, amid heavy downpours, five People's Alliance for Democracy leaders - Sondhi Limthongkul, Pipob Thongchai, Chamlong Srimuang, Somkiat Pongpaiboon and Somsak Kosaisuk — visited the hospital. They vowed to unswervingly follow His Majesty's advice.

Entertainment tycoon Paiboon Damrongchaitham escorted GMM Grammy executives and stars including Thongchai "Bird" McIntyre, Nanthida Kaewbuasai, Jirasak and Nichole Parnpoom, and Mike Piromporn to wish His Majesty a rapid recovery.

Their arrival caused a stir as people rushed to catch a glimpse of the celebrities. The Royal Household Bureau had to ask for noise levels to be lowered.

Army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin delivered his message at 3pm. He said His Majesty's speedy recovery had boosted soldiers' morale. The army pledged its loyalty and service to the King.

Military pre-cadet school director Maj-General Porpol Maneerin was accompanied to the hospital by 70 students.

As many as 40,000 well-wishers flock to the hospital every day. Food and water has been provided for the well wishers by the government and private companies.

In related news, the Royal Household Bureau announced that laser surgery on Her Majesty the Queen's right eye on Sunday was successful.

The operation was performed at the Rutnin Eye Hospital and reinforced a lens attached during earlier surgery to correct a minor retina problem. The bureau said doctors asked Her Majesty to rest and refrain from carrying out royal activities for six weeks.

The bureau said get-well messages could be delivered at a desk at the Sala Sahathai Samakhom in the Grand Palace compound.
