The two main opposition parties - Democrat and Chat Thai - yesterday announced their readiness to lead the next government if they can garner sufficient voter support.
Chat Thai deputy leader Weerasak Kowsurat said yesterday the party is ready to form the next government and make essential political reforms. The party would seek support during the election campaign by reminding voters that the last Chat Thai government pushed for reform in 1997, he said. Weerasak said the next government's main mission would be to carry out political reform, not to administer. Voters should be reminded of party leader Banharn Silapa-archa's reform credentials and vote for Chat Thai, he said. Democrat spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon, meanwhile, said his party is ready for the election and its campaign would try to capitalise on the popular image of its leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva. "We are confident that Abhisit will be a suitable prime minister given the country's [political] crisis and we believe the people will support him," the spokesman said. He said Abhisit was an honest person and had never been tainted by scandal. Furthermore, the Democrat leader's talent was recognised internationally, he said. He said the leaders of the Democrat, Chat Thai and Mahachon parties would meet at the Chon Ngern Chon Thong restaurant today to discuss the political situation and their preparations for the October 15 election. The meeting had nothing to do with Banharn's earlier luncheon meeting with Thai Rak Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra and no one would ask Banharn to discuss that meeting, Ong-art added. However, if Banharn wanted to, he would inform the two other party leaders about his meeting with Thaksin, the Democrat spokesman said.
